Chapter 10

Jessica gathered her things and swept her tracks like Kenny and Mark had taught her. She had to move fast to try to get ahead of the infected. As she moved through the tree line, she was careful not to catch the attention of the many infected that were now roaming town. She was losing much of the feeling throughout her hands and feet. Just gotta keep moving, she told herself.

Jessica saw the trail that led back to the truck. Her heart sank—the Spewers blocked the trail, so she would have to take cover and wait. She pulled the camo tarp up over her and lay down on the ground. She just had to hope they wandered away from the trail before she froze to death.

Roy, Clint, and Davis searched the camp perimeter. Davis was an experienced tracker; if there was a trail, he’d find it.

“Over here,” Davis announced. “I got a trail. There was someone here recently. They did a good job of trying to cover their tracks, but I got ’em, though. This way.”

Roy and Clint followed Davis as they began their pursuit of Jessica. Clint and Roy walked a bit behind Davis, partly to give him room to work and partly because he just creeped them out.

“Roy, why we gotta go chasing some ghost, risking our necks for what might not be nothing?”

“’Cause, little brother, when Simon tells you to do something, you do it if you wanna keep breathing.”

“Simon Says… always hated that game,” Clint said.

“Yeah, well, I sure hate it now,” Roy replied.

They walked down the trail, drawing closer to an unsuspecting Jessica.

Billy sat handcuffed to the metal chair, wearing nothing but his underwear and a T-shirt. He was freezing.

Cole came into the room. He looked different, happy, like a child that had just gotten the toy he’d always wanted. “Listen,” Billy said, “I keep tellin’ everyone this isn’t necessary. I’m not a threat. I got nothing to offer you expect maybe an extra hand to help out around here.”

Cole continued putting together his equipment as he glanced over at Billy. “We’ll soon see.” Cole walked over to Billy and put his hand on his shoulder. “Billy, I want to explain something to you. I’m not sure if you know this, but there are five basic principles of interrogation. Deprivation, blunt, hot, cold, and my favorite, sharp. Now, we will be fair. Right now, you’re experiencing the simple ones. A little cold, hunger, thirst, some fatigue. That’s deprivation. You’ll get used to that though. It’s not very effective. Then you’ll graduate to blunt, another of the more enjoyable techniques. The key to blunt is control. You can’t really tell me what I need if I beat you into oblivion now, can ya? Like I said, we will be fair. Cold and hot in this environment are pretty much irrelevant, so if we get to that point, we’ll jump right ahead to sharp. Any questions? No?
